In much the same way as the idea of “Homeland,” Ancestry is such a tricky word. It immediately calls to mind parentage and genetic lineage—often a sterile concept. But Ancestry is not merely our parents and parents’ parents, but it is the culmination of knowledge gathered by and passed down all those who came before.
Without our acknowledgement, articulation, and documentation of knowledge, it dies—but we survive long past our teachings, even though we may have been nameless for generations by the time they’re learned anew.
