We, of course, are humble creatures come from all the nameless victors who survived: the barn-raisings and the harvests and the haying and the sheepshearing and the skirting of the fleeces and the cutting and the retting of this year’s flax, then the hackling of last year’s flax, then the flicking and the combing and the spinning and the dying and the weaving. There is no such thing as humble thread.
